Uerdingen 1351: Velten family wants to leave their home devastated by the black death behind. They give up the farm and make their way to the monastery Johannisberg. From the abbott they got the offer to lease the monastic vineyards. On their journey they meet the family Stauber, which has met the same fate and which also want to become wine growers.

While traveling by boat, an argument between the families ends up in a tragic accident. Both the head of the family of Veltens and his brother die. The widow Isabel is desperate and faces a huge challenge: With the children on her own, she has to take care of the fallowed vineyard. Her landlords, the friars, are not well-disposed to her. Further her hated family Stauber does everything to put a spoke in her wheel.
